This moment beyond will set us apart.
I got married in December. I don’t have any eye opening wisdom or any huge revelation.
I wrote this poem in my last class ever as an undergraduate at UMass a year before I was married. It’s about the idea of marriage and the path to and from it. It’s written in arch form – ABCBA.

First, Imagination is master
whipping me to work it out
I’m not a robot you damn fool
but let this ride and conversation be enough
be satisfied with all I’ve done and
let me rest as best I can.
Comes second, Innovation
you are wiser than the former
by persuasion I am forced to slave for you
by patience I produce
I am used and so I use
to plan my outings and my words
and what was common is romantic
what was like is made to love.
Creation, you reign above them both
in evolution you’re the pivot
and in producing you’re so willing
you lift me up and let me watch
the roles seem switched
but you’re still leading and controlling
yet working, toiling, bleeding, feeding
from the two you sum to one
but one is two and two is fun.
Back to you, oh master Innovator
into the future I’m still working
but here you take charge to reverse the process
with little mes and little shes
and seas that we could drown in please
push me, and remind me of the field I tended
and what was common is romantic
and what was like is made to love.
Master five, you seem familiar
I’m convinced you are the first
but now I just can’t remember
you seem a vague, distant desire
a thought about a girl, a date, a ring
and little fingers and more rings
oh once you were my master
harsh and cruel you’ve made my life so full
but overshadowed by that which
you forced me to work for
for one and one is two made one
and then the one is none
no sex, no romance, no desire
overwhelmed by greater Jesus.
